In this series we will outline some of our favourite kitchen tools that will make cooking easier and more accessible to people who may have some diffabilities involving reduced mobility or coordination. They’re also great for people like me (lazy and/or messy chef) who want to make cooking as simple and easy as possible.
This veggie chopper is one of my favs, particularly when I’m making stir fries and tacos. It is a staple tool I use in cooking classes I have taught to people of all diffabilities.
What is this tool?
A vegetable chopper/dicer is one of our favourite adaptive tools here at Vacon Nutrition. It finely chops or dices veggies with one simple slam shut and is oh-so-satisfying! (see video below) There are several different models that come with a variety of blade inserts, that can be changed depending on whether you are chopping fruits or vegetables. It is a safe, fast and easy tool to use!
Who is it helpful for?
This device is particularly helpful for those that aren’t comfortable using sharp knives or those that have limited mobility in one or both hands/arms. Another bonus is that it involves one easy slamming motion, and your vegetables and fruit go right into a container, rather than all over your counter or floor. (like when Adam cooks, but you didn’t hear that from me!)
How much does it cost?
There are several different models of the vegetable choppers and the price can vary depending on the number of cutting blades included, but you can typically find them for approximately $20-$40 CAD.
Where can I get it?
If you’re looking to purchase one in a store, you can find them at Bed Bath and Beyond, Walmart or Canadian Tire, but it can sometimes be hit or miss whether they’re actually in stock. They are very easy to get online however. Here are some options:
